Starting Your Own Magazine"Start Your Journalism Career with Us!"Want to learn how to start your own magazine for free?
You don't need a degree to start and run a great local,
national or even a global magazine, but you do need to understand that content
is king. You'll also need to read a couple of books on Internet marketing.
Many successful news publishers have little or no background in journalism. And, unlike
old fashioned print newspapers and magazines, today's journalists do not have to know about
typesetting or editing to keep copy length within limited space constraints.
With that said, we do recommend
taking a few journalism writing classes at a community college or university
and buying an Associated Press (AP) Stylebook.
And, while it might sound difficult, publishing your own
magazine might turn out to be the easiest job you have ever had. Using our
overnight publishing system you will have the power to retrieve, edit and
publish news on any subject matter that your heart desires. You can work on a
single news beat or work on several news beats at the same time.
For example, if you like travel, you can work
on stories about beaches, skiing, hotels, travel packages, etc., then publish them
to your magazine to create a loyal following of readers who are looking for
great places to go and great deals on travel to exotic locations.
As your readership
grows so will the number of PR people who call and try to get you to write stories
about their resort destinations. Next thing you know, you will editing stories from
a sunny beach in the Caribbean.
The best benefit about working with us is that we have
hundreds of reporters just like you that are working on similar stories that might
be a good match for your magazine. They might cover similar news beats such as cruises,
scuba diving and resorts.
Instead of trying to create your magazine's content all by yourself,
you will have the ability to tap into hundreds of other people's content to augment
your own. Just like you, they will all need help generating content for their newspapers,
business journals, blogs and trade publications. It is just like working together to
create a news cooperative.
The more travel content you publish to your new magazine,
the more search engines will index your pages and the more unique readers will visit
your website to learn about destinations and click on your advertiser's banner ads
to find good deals on travel.
Many magazines spend a lot of money to subscribe
to very expensive travel newsfeeds from companies such as Reuters and the Associated Press.
These monthly subscriptions generally cost about $2,500-$10,000 each, which amounts
to more than $30,000-$60,000 per year for content. By working with our editorial team,
you will get your content for free.
Working by yourself on a single news beat and
generating five stories a day, you could generate 125 stories per week or 500 per month
in a typical 20-day work cycle. All by itself, the ability to generate 500 articles per
month is pretty good compared to the amount of people it used to take to publish a
newspaper or magazine.
As an active editor in our Breaking into Journalism program,
you will be eligible to carry up to nine additional newsfeeds for every news beat that you
edit. If you edit five news beats, then you would be able to carry an addition 45 news
beats for free. Your 5 beats plus 45 other beats would amass around 25,000 stories per month.
That is lot of content for free. Even the most sophisticated travel websites on the Internet
do not generate that much original content.
Even better, your audience is a global audience.
There are no distribution costs to get
your magazine to your readers. Simply build news categories, search engine optimize them
and readers will find your magazine all by themselves.
All you really need to start your own magazines is a
domain name such as www.mymagazine.com ($10), a magazine website template ($65)
and a data center to host the website ($200 per year).
You'll also need to set up account with
free account Google to carry their Google ads, and with Kontera, which provides contextual text link ads.
I would also recommend hiring an advertising media representative firm to sell banner
advertising campaigns, which can produce $3,000 to $100,000 per month in revenue.
Once everything is up and running you should also be using Google tools such
Google Trends, to determine the hottest news categories, and
Google Analytics, to
determine the statistical data on readers visiting your website.
However, before spending any money on the setting up a website, try processing 50-100
articles per week for a couple of months. If you like it, you have found the perfect
home-based business. If not, you can move on to something else without losing any
money.
